As a Board Certified Gastroenterologist I have seen thousands of patients with gut issues both in India and USA. I have looked inside and sampled tissue from thousands of human guts with colonoscopy and endoscopy. I address digestive diseases such as celiac disease, Crohn’s Disease, malabsorption syndromes, colon polyps, hereditary cancer syndromes and nutrition deficiencies using the most updated scientific and peer reviewed literature. I perform fecal transplant or fecal microbiota transplant for a condition called Clostridium difficile that is acquired due to disruption of gut flora by antibiotics and weakened immune system. I enjoy the field of Nutrition.
GUT HEALTH is the new in thing. Social media postings are always trending poop and Gut Health. Poop emojis are flying around all over the cyberspace. Well deservedly, the Gut is the coolest kid on the block.
The digestive system includes tongue, salivary glands, mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, liver, pancreas, gall bladder system, small gut and large gut.
In the human adult the length of digestive system is 650 cm TO 920 cm length (23 TO 26 FEET) FROM MOUTH TO ANUS. Length of the human esophagus is around 25 cm. Stomach length is average 30 cm. Total lengths of small bowel ranges from 6 to 7 meters (20-23 feet) while the large gut (colon) is about 1.5 meters (5 feet).
The two other most crucial parts of the digestive system are liver and pancreas. Liver is a sophisticated organ and has a large role in metabolism, creating new molecules, detoxification and clearing toxins from the body. It weighs about 1.4- 1.6 Kgs in males and 1.2-1.4 Kgs in females. Pancreas helps in digestion of food by creating digestive enzymes and weighs about 60-100 GRAMS and length is 12.5 -15 cm. Gut has alive and functional 100 Trillion microbes that create vitamins and health promoting byproducts. Gut flora helps regulate your immune system and may have a role in your mood and overall feeling of well-being.
Due to our fast paced “do it now” lifestyle the gut, liver and pancreas are assaulted by numerous environmental toxins, heavy metals, bacteria, viruses, fungi and emotional stress that threatens gut health and overall well-being. A healthy functioning gut is crucial for the proper detoxification of ingested toxins. The brain works better when the digestive system is healthy.
As a Board Certified Gastroenterologist with focus on Nutrition & Integrative Medicine I practice what I preach. Food affects gut health and can change DNA expression. We can achieve our maximum genetic potential by appropriate nutrition.
I feel a sense of responsibility to try becoming “Gut Health Navigator” for global citizens as I believe that “Gut is the New Frontier into Optimal Human Health”
I BELIEVE that “Food can heal”.
Human Gut has 100 Trillion Microbes that weigh about 1 kg or 2.2 lbs. in weight. In a typical person there is more microbial DNA than human DNA.
GUT is an intelligent bioreactor that never sleeps and has numerous functions namely:
1. Defense against outside pathogens and toxins
2. Immune regulation (85% of body’s immune cells live in the gut)
3. Production of vitamins such as Vitamin K and folic acid
4. Absorption & digestion of food to extract the simple molecules needed for body functions
5. Eighty percent of your body’s serotonin and many other neurochemicals are in the gut and play a role in gut function cooking healthy foods
